Recently, the 67-year-old singer, also known by his stage name Johnny Rotten, endeavored to represent Ireland at Eurovision with a song dedicated to his wife.
Nora Forster, the wife of former Sex Pistols vocalist John Lydon, has passed away at the age of 80 after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
After his wife’s diagnosis, the 67-year-old singer, also known by his stage moniker Johnny Rotten, was her full-time carer.
His band Public Image Ltd attempted to represent Ireland at this year’s Eurovision with a composition dedicated to Ms. Forster. (PiL).
In a tweet, Lydon said, “It is with a heavy heart that we share the tragic news that John Lydon’s wife of nearly half a century, Nora Forster, has passed away.
Nora had Alzheimer’s disease for several years. During this time, John became her full-time attendant.
Please be considerate of John’s grief and give him space.
“May Nora rest in peace. John has our deepest condolences from Rambo and everyone at PiL Official.”
The couple first met in 1975 at the clothing store co-owned by the late artist Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood in London.
Lydon and Ms. Forster, the daughter of the affluent German publisher Franz Karl Maier, were in a 45-year relationship.
She was also the mother of the late musician Ari-Up, who was best known as a member of the English punk rock band the Slits and who passed away in 2010 due to a “serious illness.”
As a tribute to a vacation they took together, Lydon’s Eurovision entry was titled Hawaii.
During his Eurovision campaign, he stated, “As I say in the song, old journeys end and some begin again, but this is the beginning of a new journey with us.
“And, despite the severity of Alzheimer’s, there are many tender moments between us. And I attempted to convey this in the composition so that not everything is waiting for the Grim Reaper.
“I can see her demeanor in her eyes, and she informs me that her communication skills are her downfall.
“And I’m truly fortunate that I’m able to be there, observe this, and possibly share it with others as this inevitably progresses towards its ultimate demise.”
“Pass on something beneficial to others. I now care for all of its victims because I am so firmly entwined and intertwined with the topic. Especially to spouses who must endure this.”
Alzheimer’s disease is the most prevalent cause of dementia in the United Kingdom. Dementia is a group of symptoms associated with a progressive decline in brain function.
According to the NHS, the condition can affect memory, reasoning, and other cognitive functions.
Hilda Hayo, the chief executive of Dementia UK, expressed her condolences to Lydon and his family.
In recent months, John’s work has raised a great deal of awareness about the impact that an Alzheimer’s diagnosis can have. “By sharing his personal experience, he has undoubtedly assisted others in finding the support they require,” she said.
“The death of a loved one is one of the most difficult experiences many of us will ever encounter, and we pray he receives the necessary support during his time of grief.
