Forecasters predict uncommon freezing rain and snow in the UK, threatening lives.

The United Kingdom must endure one more day of brutally cold weather before highs of 14 degrees Celsius arrive on Monday.

Forecasters have issued severe weather warnings for wide portions of the United Kingdom because freezing rain and snow pose a threat to human life.

The Met Office has issued an amber ice warning for the north of England from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., stating that freezing rain and snow could result in 2-3 millimeters of ice on untreated surfaces.

The weather might cause hazardous driving conditions, public transportation issues, and power outages.

Freezing rain occurs when rain meets a cold surface and freezes very instantaneously, creating spectacular visual effects as the raindrop expands out momentarily before freezing and encasing the surface in a layer of clear ice.

It is uncommon in the UK.

There are yellow weather warnings for fog, ice, snow, and rain in effect for several other areas of the United Kingdom on Sunday, with a change likely on Monday.

Monday’s highest daytime temperatures will range from 11 to 14 degrees Celsius, a stark contrast to the icy conditions of the last week.

Forecaster Marco Petagna of the Met Office said: “Currently, daytime temperatures remain in the single digits, and some regions are slightly below zero due to snow cover.

Monday’s midday temperatures in the United Kingdom are expected to reach 11C to 14C, which is approximately 15 degrees warmer than they have been.

On Monday, Aberdeen might reach a high of 12C or 13C, while London could reach 14C when northerly breezes are replaced by winds from the west or southwest.

Mr. Petagna stated that these temperatures are not unheard of at this time of year, but the rapid transition from extremely cold to extremely mild in a few days is quite rare.

Peter Jenkins, head of campaigns at Water UK, said that the increase in temperature could lead to pipe bursts.

He said: “The last thing we want is for residents to endure additional disruption as temperatures climb this weekend, putting many houses in danger for frozen pipe bursts.

“Because of this, we’re advising everyone to inspect the insulation of their water pipes and to follow our basic weatherproofing advice.”
