Several locations in the United Kingdom are expected to be impacted by the announcement, attributed to significant shifts in the gaming industry.

Sony has disclosed its intention to eliminate 900 positions throughout its PlayStation division, including operations in the United Kingdom.

The Japan-based company informed employees via email that the PlayStation London studio would be shut down in accordance with the proposals.

Additionally, employment will be reduced at the Firesprite Studio in Liverpool, which Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) acquired in 2021.

Other UK employees in a variety of functions will be affected, according to a missive to staff from the division’s departing CEO.

The decision was made, according to Jim Ryan, who is preparing to resign in March, because the “industry has changed drastically” and the company needed to “position ourselves to set the business up for what lies ahead.

“We have come to the extremely difficult conclusion that, subject to local law and consultation procedures, we intend to reduce our global personnel by approximately 8%, or 900 individuals. This announcement is made in light of this decision.

He further stated that the impact extends to our studios and employees worldwide.

Insomniac Games, situated in the United States, is one of Sony’s additional studios. The company has contributed to titles including Spider-Man 2 and Naughty Dog.

According to its website, Firesprite employs over two hundred developers.

Numerous technology and gaming companies have implemented reductions in staff in recent months. This is in response to persistent global economic uncertainty, which has impacted sales expansion and changes in game development.

The company warned earlier this month that PlayStation 5 sales will decline starting in the new fiscal year.

There were no significant franchise title releases scheduled for the upcoming year.

Microsoft announced a month ago that, subsequent to its acquisition of Activision Blizzard, it would eliminate nearly 2,000 employees.

The popular “League of Legends” multiplayer war game creator Riot Games announced 11% layoffs in January.
