Tesco is the most recent supermarket to increase wages to retain employees in light of the increasing minimum wage and other challenges retailers face.
In April, the hourly wage for store employees will increase from £11.02 to £12.02, whereas London workers will earn £13.15 per hour.
Tesco stated that the increase will benefit over two hundred thousand employees.
The voluntarily agreed-upon Real Living Wage, which surpasses the mandatory National Living Wage, will be provided to all personnel.
In April 2024, the National Living Wage, also known as the minimum wage, will increase to £11.44 per hour and will, for the first time, apply to individuals aged 21 and 22.
In recent weeks, numerous major supermarkets have issued announcements regarding pay agreements.
In line with Sainsbury’s, Asda, Aldi, Lidl and M&S, Tesco has increased its outside-of-London minimum wage to £12 per hour.
The wage increase at Aldi went into effect at the beginning of February, whereas the wage increases at Lidl and Sainsbury’s began in March. M&S is scheduled to implement a salary increase in April, whereas Asda will commence an interim wage increase of £11.44 per hour on 1 April, which will be further escalated to £12.04 per hour on 1 July.
In addition to increasing wages, Tesco announced that paternity leave would be extended to six weeks of completely paid leave.

Furthermore, Tesco announced that it would augment the utmost allowable duration of sick leave for eligible employees to eighteen weeks.
The supermarket stated that by eliminating distinct pay rates for inner London and outer London employees in favour of a single London Allowance, it remained in compliance with the voluntary London Real Living Wage at £13.15 per hour.
National officer of the shopworkers’ union Usdaw, Daniel Adams, stated, “This agreement not only provides Tesco employees with an increase that combats inflation, but it also demonstrates the value of progressive employers engaging in constructive dialogue with trade unions at a time when our members continue to feel the pinch of rising living expenses.”
