Mr. Johnson, who was in 10 Downing Street when Russia invaded Ukraine in February of last year, has been an ardent supporter of Kyiv ever since, making multiple trips there.

Doctor Honoris Causa, which translates to “for the sake of honor,” was conferred to the former prime minister by the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv.

Someone may receive a doctoral or master’s degree without prior academic affiliation.

For the ceremony, he donned a cloak and headgear, and he also attended the Yalta European Strategy forum.

On Friday, Volodomyr Zelenskyy’s Telegram channel broadcast a video of Mr. Johnson and former US ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul listening to the Ukraine leader’s address.

Together with Mr. Zelenskyy’s chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, Mr. McFaul heads an international working group on sanctions against Moscow.

Mr. Zelenskyy stated in his speech that “for many people around the globe, Ukraine is not just a European country defending itself against Russian aggression.”

According to him, his country has become “a personal moral choice” and a symbol of “a freedom standard in which people from different nations recognize their standards.”

Mr. Johnson, who is no longer an MP after resigning earlier this year, was in 10 Downing Street in February 2014 when Russia invaded Ukraine.

As prime minister, he was an ardent supporter of Kyiv, and he frequently visited the nation before and after his departure in July 2022.

When the former Tory leader arrived, Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi called him “a great friend of Ukraine” (Ukrinform).

Mr. Sadovyi published photographs of his meeting with Boris Johnson at the train station with the caption, “Welcome to Lviv, a great friend of Ukraine Boris Johnson.”

Mr. Johnson published a video in May in which he thanked the university for the award and promised to travel to Lviv to receive it.
