The man accused of constructing the bomb that exploded Pan Am 103 over Lockerbie in 1988 is currently in US jail.

When he will make his presence is unclear.

At 38,000ft, a bomb installed on the airliner exploded, killing about 243 passengers and 16 staff.

In Lockerbie, Dumfries, and Galloway, eleven more individuals were killed as falling debris struck their homes.

It remains Britain’s bloodiest terrorist strike.

Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al Megrahi was the only person convicted of the tragedy; he was sentenced to life in prison in 2001 and freed on compassionate grounds in 2009 after being diagnosed with cancer. He died in 2012.

The Scottish authorities stated, “The relatives of those killed in the Lockerbie bombing have been informed that the suspect, Abu Agila Mohammad Mas’ud Kheir al Marimi, is currently in U.S. custody.”

“Scottish prosecutors and police, in collaboration with the United Kingdom government and American colleagues, will continue to pursue this inquiry with the sole intent of bringing those who acted with al Megrahi to justice.”

In 2020, William Barr, the attorney general of the United States, charged Mas’ud with being the third person involved in the terrorist act.

At the time, he was believed to be in Libyan captivity, and Mr. Barr stated that American and Scottish authorities would work “hand in hand.”

Mr. Barr stated, “Let there be no doubt, neither time nor distance will prevent the United States and its Scottish partners from seeking justice in this case.”
