Villagers reported that no notice was given before the attack.

The concert in Kansi was intended to commemorate the 62nd anniversary of the rebel army’s autonomous battle.

Sunday at approximately 20:30 (14:00 GMT), eyewitnesses reported three massive explosions. They ripped away the cluster of buildings at the base and inflicted a significant number of casualties among the spectators.

There were likely four well-known Kachin singers among those dead. According to witnesses, the soldiers prevented doctors from transporting the wounded to the hospital in the nearby town of Hpakant.

Myanmar crisis

This portion of Kachin State has been heavily contested for many years by the military and Kachin militants due to its estimated $30bn (£27bn) worth of jade mines.

Before and after last year’s military coup, which toppled the civilian administration led by Aung San Suu Kyi, there was frequent fighting there.

This strike may be retaliation or a warning for the help the Kachin insurgents have provided to other armed groups in Myanmar organized to resist the coup.
