The assault occurred while the woman, a resident, and her five-year-old daughter were swimming.
She is believed to have succumbed to blood loss resulting from the severe bite laceration on her leg. Her daughter escaped injury.
On Saturday, authorities reported that the assault occurred in the waters off the beach town of Melaque in the western Mexican state of Jalisco.
The director of the local civil defence office, Rafael Araiza, stated that the woman and her daughter were swimming towards a floating play platform approximately 25 metres (75 feet) from the shore at the time of the attack.
It is reported that she was attempting to elevate her infant onto the platform when the shark bit her.
Despite their prompt arrival, rescuers could not save her, according to Mr. Araiza.
In response, authorities prohibited swimmers from accessing the beaches of Melaque and the more popular coastal town of Barra de Navidad.
