Diego Barria died in a car accident, according to Argentine officials.
The remains of a man who vanished earlier this month may have been discovered inside a shark.
Diego Barria, a 32-year-old father of three, was last seen driving his ATV on February 18 in Chubut, Argentina.
Early on Sunday morning, two fishermen reported to the local coastguard that they had captured three school sharks near where Mr. Barria’s vehicle had been discovered.
Daniela Millatruz, the law enforcement officer in command of his search, told local media that fishermen claimed to have discovered human remains in one of the sharks while cleaning them.
She added that Mr. Barria’s family recognized him “due to a tattoo that appeared in one of those remains.” Although DNA testing will also be conducted to corroborate his identity.
Mr. Barria’s wrecked vehicle was discovered on a shore near Rocas Coloradas two days after he vanished. But the cause of his disappearance remains unknown.
Ms. Millatruz stated, “We believe Diego was involved in an accident, and we are determining if a vehicle was involved.”
Cristian Ansaldo, the chief of police in the city of Comodoro Rivadavia, stated that the shark was approximately 1.5 meters in length and that Mr. Barria “probably had an accident and was carried.”
According to him, Mr. Barria had vanished over the weekend due to a significant tide surge.
