Denmark calls for female military duty to ‘prevent war’

Given the proximity of a significant conflict to Copenhagen, approximately 1,000 miles, and Russia’s warning that the conflict could spread beyond Ukraine, Denmark has declared an increase in defence expenditure of £4.4 billion.

Denmark is enlisting female citizens for military service in an effort to “avoid war” despite Russian aggression.

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen added that within the next five years, “in a world where the international order is being challenged,” the country intends to increase its defence expenditure by £4.4 billion.

In the early 1990s, following the end of the Cold War, Denmark reduced its military capabilities, similar to many other European nations.

But now that a major conflict is raging across the continent, everything is new.

“Our objective in rearming in Denmark is not to incite war, devastation, or human suffering.” “At this time, we are preparing for war and a world in which the international order is under attack,” Frederiksen explained.

Although Denmark has met the NATO spending objective through substantial military assistance for Ukraine, which includes the donation of F-16 fighter jets, the country has yet to make a significant investment in its forces.

The strategies encompass increasing the mandatory military service duration from four to eleven months while also ensuring gender equality in the call-up process (equivalent to both males and women).

Land-based air defence systems and a heavy infantry brigade of up to 6,000 personnel, which could be deployed as part of NATO’s high-alert emergency forces, will be funded through investments.

Russia has previously cautioned that the West is “walking on the edge of the abyss” and that the conflict may extend beyond the borders of Ukraine.

According to foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova, the conflict could potentially escalate and spiral “out of control” due to the actions of “one or two” NATO members on Wednesday.

Additionally, she asserted that the West should abandon any pursuit of strategically defeating Russia.
