She praised her son, remarking, “Tyre was a great individual, and it is unfathomable that this has happened to him.

“The only thing keeping me going is the belief that God brought my kid here on a mission. I assume that his duty is now complete and he has been taken home.”

The siblings of Mr. Nichols also paid respect to their brother. His sister remarked, “He lost his life, his passions, and his abilities, but not his light.”

When she heard the news, she remarked. “I lost my faith, cried, and yelled at God, demanding to know how he could allow this to occur.

“When those monsters murdered my infant brother, my cries morphed into rage, and my rage became profound grief. They left me with a broken heart.

My family will never be the same, and I will forever cherish my little brother.

Rev. Sharpton summoned Ms. Harris to the pulpit. Where she stated, “Let our memory of Tyre illuminate the path to peace and justice.”

Ms. Harris applauded Tyre Nichols’ family’s “courage and strength.”

“We mourn with you, and so do the people of our nation”.

“Yet, we have a mother and father who lament the loss of a young guy who should have been present today”.

They have a grandchild who is currently fatherless. His siblings would lose interest in growing old with their baby brother.

“When we look at this circumstance, we see a family who lost a son and a brother due to an act of violence at the hands and feet of those entrusted with their safety,” she said.

Was he not likewise deserving of the right to safety?

Rev. Sharpton condemned the officers who assaulted Mr. Nichols.

Recalling Martin Luther King’s assassination in Memphis 55 years ago as he was advocating for the rights of black workers, he inquired: “What has become of the dream in the place where they slew the dreamer?

“Five black males who would not have been hired by the police… in the city where Dr. King was assassinated, not far from that balcony, you murdered a brother.

“Nothing is more insulting and offensive than this. You did not join the police department on your own. To open the doors for you, people had to march and go to jail, and some even sacrificed their lives.

How dare you act as though that sacrifice was in vain!

Hundreds of mourners filled the chapel, including the families of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, who were killed by police officers in 2020, as well as Oscar-winning director Spike Lee.

The jubilant choir chanted “we love you Tyre” as mourners entered Memphis’ Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church for Tyre’s burial.

Mourners were shown photographs shot by Mr. Nichols, as well as images of him as a child and engaging in his favorite hobby, skateboarding, along with a comment ascribed to the 29-year-old: “My objective is to bring my viewers deep into what I am seeing through my eye and out through my lens.”

The black casket of Mr. Nichols was draped with a white bouquet and placed next to a painting of Martin Luther King and other important figures and phrases.

After a traffic stop on January 7, Memphis police officers punched, kicked, and batoned Mr. Nichols.

Five police officers have been charged with second-degree murder and dismissed, while two others have been placed on administrative leave.

After an inquiry revealed that Mr. Nichols was left without medical care for over 15 minutes following the assault, the Memphis Fire Department fired three employees.

As a result of the publishing of the attack’s video, various U.S. cities have experienced protests.
