At least seven people have been killed after a gunman opened fire at a Walmart in Chesapeake, Virginia, according to officials.
A guy assumed to be the store’s manager, opened fire and then shot himself, resulting in his death.
An earlier tweet from the City of Chesapeake confirmed an “active shooter situation with fatalities.”
Several more were wounded during the shooting. The attacker’s motivation is unknown.
Reporters were informed by police that the attack occurred at 22:12 local time (03:12 GMT).
The online video purported to show an eyewitness discussing the incident while wearing a Walmart outfit.
He stated that he had exited a staff room before a manager entered and opened fire.
“Unfortunately, we lost a number of our colleagues,” the man stated, emphasizing that he did not know how many of his coworkers had been shot.
Leo Kosinski, a police spokeswoman, stated that the shooting likely occurred inside the store and that the suspect acted alone.
Walmart stated that it was “struck by this horrific incident” and was “working closely with law enforcement.”
Wednesday morning, police in Chesapeake are anticipated to provide an update.
WAVY-TV cited a representative for Sentara Norfolk General Hospital as reporting that five patients were receiving treatment there.
A lady informed WAVY-TV that her brother, a 20-year-old worker at the store, was shot just 10 minutes after starting work.
However, she reported that her sibling was able to communicate with family members and send SMS, describing this as “comforting.”
Joetta Jeffery, a second lady, told CNN that her mother was inside the building during the incident and managed to send text messages.
Ms. Jeffrey stated that her mother was unharmed but in shock.
Virginia senator Mark Warner, a Democrat, tweeted that he was “sickened by reports of yet another horrific massacre.”
Senator L. Louise Lucas, a Democrat from Virginia, added that she was “very devastated.”
She tweeted, “I will not rest until we discover the solutions to end the plague of gun violence in our country.”
The incident on Tuesday evening came only days after a shooter opened fire at an LGBT nightclub in the U.S. state of Colorado, killing five and injuring seventeen others.
In 2019, 23 people were killed in a mass shooting at a Walmart in the Texas city of El Paso.
