Three Russian entities and one individual have been sanctioned by the United States on suspicion of involvement in the transfer and testing of North Korean ballistic missiles intended for Moscow’s potential use in its conflict with Ukraine.
In response to criticism from the United States and its allies regarding the arms trade between Russia and North Korea, they took this action. The United States government issued a strong condemnation of Russia’s procurement of North Korean ballistic missiles, citing their deployment against Ukraine on December 30 and January 2, respectively.
“By transferring ballistic missiles from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea to Russia, the DPRK supports Russia’s aggressive war effort, exacerbates the suffering of the Ukrainian people, and undermines the global nonproliferation regime,” US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement on Thursday.
He stated, “We will not hesitate to take additional actions.”
Since the commencement of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022, diplomatic relations between Moscow and Pyongyang have intensified; however, both nations have refrained from discussing the possibility of arms transactions.
A meeting between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Russian President Vladimir Putin took place in the Far East of Russia in September. Also on numerous occasions, senior Russian officials have embarked on visits to Pyongyang.
Russia conducted multiple assaults against Ukraine using short-range ballistic missiles sourced from North Korea, according to newly declassified intelligence cited by the White House last week. A senior Ukrainian official subsequently confirmed this claim.
North Korea has been subject to an arms embargo imposed by the United Nations ever since its maiden nuclear test in 2006.
With the backing of Russia, resolutions of the United Nations Security Council prohibit nations from engaging in the trade of weaponry or other military equipment with North Korea.
