During the pursuit of the culprit, a state trooper was wounded in a gunfight.
Thursday at 2.30 p.m. (7:00 p.m. GMT), police were dispatched to the apartment in the town of Smithsburg.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office reports three fatalities and one serious injury. An officer who attempted to pursue the shooter was also shot in the shoulder.
Sgt. Carly Hose reported that the suspect had fled the location by the time officers arrived but was located in a car approximately five miles from the plant.
There, an “exchange of gunfire” occurred, resulting in the Maryland State Police trooper’s injury.
Following the “confrontation,” the suspect was shot, wounded, and taken to the hospital.
About 75 miles northwest of Baltimore, near the Maryland-Pennsylvania state line, is the almost 3,000-person village of Smithsburg.
The massacre occurred less than two weeks after high school dropout Salvador Ramos opened fire at an elementary school in the small Texas town of Uvalde, killing 21 people.
