Following the “confrontation,” the suspect was shot, wounded, and taken to the hospital.

About 75 miles northwest of Baltimore, near the Maryland-Pennsylvania state line, is the almost 3,000-person village of Smithsburg.

The massacre occurred less than two weeks after high school dropout Salvador Ramos opened fire at an elementary school in the small Texas town of Uvalde, killing 21 people.
