At a rally in Texas, Kamala Harris dismissed Donald Trump’s questioning of her racial identity, claiming it was “the same old show” and that “America deserves better.”
On Wednesday, at an appearance at the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), Trump attacked senior Black journalists and questioned Harris’ race, claiming, “She was always of Indian origin, and she was only pushing Indian heritage. I had no idea she was Black until a few years ago when she unexpectedly turned Black.”
Axios said his interview was scheduled to last an hour but was cut short after 34 minutes.
In Houston, Harris appeared unconcerned and kept her response to Trump’s statements brief.
This afternoon,” she added, stopping to elicit boos from the audience. Donald Trump spoke at the annual meeting of the National Association of Black Journalists.
“It was the same old show: divisiveness and disrespect.” Let me say that the American people deserve better. The American people deserve a leader who speaks the truth. A leader who does not react with hatred and rage when confronted with facts. We demand a leader who recognizes that our diversity doeses not divide s, buservesves as a crucial source of strength.”
The expected Democratic presidential nominee was speaking at Sigma Gamma Rho’s 60th International Biennial Boulé, which brought together the Black sorority’s entire membership in Houston, Texas. Harris stated that she was there as a “proud member of the Divine Nine,” a collection of the most historically dominant Black fraternities and sororities in the United States. Harris is a former Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority member.
According to a statement from the Harris campaign, “The Donald Trump America saw at NABJ is the one Black voters have known for years.”
On Wednesday evening, Trump spoke at his first rally in Pennsylvania since the attempted assassination of him last month.
Trump stated about Harris, “Don’t forget. Four weeks ago, she was labeled “the worst” and had a “personality makeover.” She is now being referred to as the “new Margaret Thatcher.”
Giant screens flashed a 2016 Business Insider headline referring to Harris as the first “Indian-American US senator” as supporters waited for Trump at the rally, which began an hour late.
According to the Washington Post, Harris’ husband, second gentleman Doug Emhoff, who was also attacked by Trump this week, said Trump’s words in Chicago showed “a worse version of an already horrible person” on Wednesday evening in Maine. “He should never be near the White House again.”

“The insults, the BS—it’s horrible, it’s terrible, and it shows a lack of character,” says Emhoff.
As Trump delivered his remarks on the NABJ panel, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre spoke with journalists. When asked about the comments the journalist had read, she initially claimed she would be “cautious” but then changed her mind. “Wait. “No, no, no,” she responded.
“As a person of color, as a Black woman in this position,” she remarked, alluding to her role, “What he just said, what you just read to me, is repugnant. It is offensive.”
Harris was the only person qualified to reveal her identity, she continued.
“And I think it’s insulting to anybody—it doesn’t matter if it’s a former leader or a former president—it is insulting.”
