- Former VP Dick Cheney endorses Kamala Harris, calling Trump a threat
- Cheney’s daughter, Liz, also supports Harris after opposing Trump
- Trump responds by calling the Cheneys “irrelevant RINOs”
Former US Vice President Dick Cheney, a lifetime Republican, has announced that he will vote for Democratic nominee Kamala Harris in the November 5 presidential election.
In our nation’s 248-year history, there has never been an individual who is a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump,” Cheney said of the GOP candidate and former US president.
Cheney, who was vice president under President George W Bush from 2001 to 2009, reiterated his support for Harris in a statement on Friday, saying Trump “can never be trusted with power again.
He [Trump] attempted to steal the last election by using lies and violence to maintain himself in power after voters rejected him, Cheney claimed.
“As citizens, we individually have a responsibility to prioritize nation before partisanship to safeguard our Constitution. That is why I will vote for Vice President Kamala Harris,” he explained.
His daughter, Liz Cheney, a former Republican congresswoman from Wyoming, endorsed Harris on Wednesday.
Liz Cheney became a vocal Trump opponent after thousands of his followers stormed the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, in an attempt to overturn his electoral result. She co-chaired a congressional probe into the assault.
On Friday, Trump responded on his Truth Social platform by branding the Cheneys “irrelevant RINO,” a term he uses to describe Republicans who are not loyal to him and stands for “Republicans in Name Only.”

According to Jen O’Malley Dillon, Harris’ campaign chair, “the vice president is proud to have the support of Vice President Cheney, and deeply respects his courage to put country over party.”
Harris reacted to the news on Saturday, while taking a break from prepping for the September 10 presidential debate.
“I’m honored to have their endorsement,” Harris told reporters during an appearance at Penzeys Spices in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
She applauded the Cheneys’ decision. “It’s okay, if not important, to put the country above party.”
Several other prominent Republicans have come out in support of Harris, while some, such as Senator Mitt Romney and former Vice President Mike Pence, have stated that they will not vote for Trump.
