He addressed several hundred supporters, club members, and members of the press in a ballroom at his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida, surrounded by American flags and “Make America Great Again!” banners.
Donald Trump has officially announced his third run for the presidency of the United States, following multiple hints and despite legal probes and recrimination for the Republican Party’s poor performance in the midterm elections.
He announced his Florida residence, Mar-a-Lago, and stated, “America’s resurgence begins right now.”
Mr. Trump stated that after four years in office, “everyone was doing great,” “the world was at peace,” and he “kept his promises.
“Two years ago, we were a great nation, and we will soon be a great nation again,” the former president of the United States stated.
Biden and the radical left are forcing us to accept America’s demise… this is not a decline we must accept.
In a ballroom at his Florida club, he addressed several hundred fans, club members, and members of the press, who were flanked by American flags and banners that said “Make America Great Again!”
Before Mr. Trump’s address, his advisers filed papers for his 2024 presidential campaign.
His much-anticipated declaration to run comes as Republicans are still reeling from the defeat of many of Mr. Trump’s personally chosen and endorsed candidates in the US midterm elections.
He had planned to utilize his party’s anticipated gains as a catapult to the candidacy for his party. In contrast, he is now being blamed for supporting a string of unsuccessful candidates in the wake of disappointing Senate election results.
House leadership is still too close to call.
Before announcing a presidential bid, Mr. Trump was urged by aides and allies to wait until after the midterms and the runoff election for the Georgia Senate on 6 December.
However, it appears that the former president was eager to return to the limelight.
He also hopes to fend off a long list of potential challengers, including Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who won re-election last week and is being urged by many in his party to run for president.
Mr. Trump referred to him as “Ron DeSanctimonious” and characterized him as “in dire shape.”
More than a quarter of voters (28%) said they voted “to oppose Donald Trump,” even though he was no longer in office, making the midterm elections last week as much of a referendum on the outgoing president as they were on incumbent President Joe Biden.
After his controversial four-year administration ended on 6 January 2021 with deadly Capitol riots, he remains in a significant position in the Republican Party, but he is a divided figure.
He has continued to erroneously assert that his election loss, which sparked the riots, was due to fraud, and he is currently the subject of multiple investigations, including those into his tax issues and whether he took sensitive papers from the White House after leaving office.
However, a survey conducted last month revealed that 41% of Americans viewed him favorably.
convicted twice
Even for a former president who made history by becoming the first to be impeached twice, a second campaign is a stunning turn of events.
In the history of the United States, only one president was elected to two non-consecutive terms: Grover Cleveland in 1884 and 1892.
Mr. Trump wrote on his Truth Social media network on Monday, “Hopefully, tomorrow will turn out to be one of the most significant days in our country’s history!”
