Emergency workers were required to cut a hole in the bottom of the tank to extricate the employees who fell into the vat of sweet treats while performing maintenance.

A chocolate factory that produces M&Ms and Mars bars was fined more than $14,500 (£12,000) when two workers fell into a vat of chocolate.

The United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) cited Mars Wrigley in the June 2022 disaster at the M&M/Mars facility in Pennsylvania, stating that the workers were not authorized to operate in the tanks and were not trained in the required safety measures for the equipment.

The two workers, who were employed by an outside contracting company. Reportedly fell into the partially filled chocolate tank while performing maintenance at the Elizabethtown facility.

Emergency personnel cut a hole in the tank bottom to free the pair.

One was transported to the hospital by helicopter.

Last week, a corporate official told reporters that the safety of employees and third-party contractors “is our priority.”
