- Trump-appointed judges support immunity ruling
- Biden: ruling breaches “no kings in America” notion
- Supreme Court sends Trump’s case to lower court
The court’s decision was made with the support of three conservative judges selected by Donald Trump during his presidency, and it could be critical to his future.
According to Joe Biden, the historic finding that previous presidents enjoy immunity breaches the notion that “there are no kings in America.” It indicates that the commander-in-chief can now “ignore the law.”
He spoke after the US Supreme Court ruled that official activities performed while in office are immune from criminal prosecution, but unofficial acts are not.
All of us are equal before the law. No one is above the law, including the president of the United States,” Mr Biden stated.
The decision is a triumph for Donald Trump, who has been accused of illegally attempting to overturn his 2020 election defeat.
I am sure that I will respect the boundaries of presidential power, as I have for the past three and a half years, Mr Biden continued.
However, any president, including Donald Trump, can now ignore the law.
The Supreme Court did not rule on the merits of Trump’s argument; instead, it referred it back to a lower court to determine how to apply the decision.
It must now determine whether Trump acted officially or privately in response to the claims.
President Biden said Monday’s ruling made it “highly unlikely” that the ex-president would face trial before US people vote again in four months.
It is a tremendous disservice to the citizens of this country, he declared.
If Trump is elected president again in November, he can utilise his authority to dismiss the allegations against him.
He had previously welcomed the decision, writing online, “BIG WIN FOR OUR CONSTITUTION AND DEMOCRACY.” PROUD TO BE AMERICAN!
The three liberal justices dissented from the majority ruling, with Sonia Sotomayor warning that it was a hazardous step for democracy.
She claimed it made a “mockery” of the idea that “no man is above the law”.
She claimed the president is now a king above the law in all their official actions.
The chief justice, John Roberts, argued it was false but stated that they enjoy “at least presumptive immunity from prosecution” for official acts.
The ruling was supported by three conservative justices chosen by Trump during his presidency.
Mr Biden’s comments come after his dismal performance in last week’s TV debate with Trump, which sparked speculation that the Democrats could try to replace him as a candidate.

The 81-year-old made his first speech from the White House since then, and he delivered a significantly more assured and coherent performance, even sporting a brilliant tan.
However, Mr Biden was reading off an autocue, which he did not have during his stuttering confrontation with Trump.
Mr Biden conceded last week that his arguing abilities had deteriorated but that his substance and actions were more important.
His family has also urged him to persevere.
Democrat insiders expressed concern following the TV catastrophe, but any attempt to force him to withdraw against his will is highly doubtful. The only practical option is for him to step down himself.
