Belarus has summoned the Ukrainian ambassador, claiming that it has intercepted a Ukrainian air defense missile on Belarusian soil.
It occurred amid one of Russia’s most intense aircraft assaults against Ukraine.
It looked that footage from Belarusian state television showed missile debris on a field.
A Ukrainian military spokesman stated that air defense was responsible for the event.
After the S-300 rocket fell near the border, Belarus, a key ally of Russia, urged that Kyiv conduct a comprehensive inquiry.
It is the first time since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February that Belarus has intercepted a Ukrainian missile.
The Ukrainian ambassador was summoned to the Belarussian foreign ministry.
“The Belarusian side considers this occurrence to be of the utmost gravity,” Anatoly Glaz, a spokeswoman for the Belarusian news, told Reuters.
He urged Ukraine to “take thorough measures to prevent such occurrences from occurring in the future.”
In a news briefing on Friday, the Kremlin expressed its deep worry regarding the tragedy.
Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense stated that it was willing to accept experts from countries that do not support “the terrorist state of Russia” to assist in the investigation of the incident, adding that it reserved “the unqualified right to defend and preserve its sky.”
It stated that it did not rule out the possibility of a “deliberate provocation” in which Moscow launched cruise missiles over Belarusian territory.
Belarus reported that the missile crashed near the village of Harbacha in the Brest region, some 15 kilometers (9 miles) from the Ukrainian border.
A witness reported to Radio Free Europe, “Our windows were rattling and the house was vibrating from what was likely a sound wave.”
Oleg Konovalov, the military commissar of the Brest region, attempted to minimize the incident.
“Unfortunately, these things occur,” he stated in a social media video.
He linked it to an incident that occurred in Poland last month when a missile landed and killed two people. Jens Stoltenberg, the head of NATO, stated that Kyiv’s air defenses were “most certainly” at fault, although Ukraine rejected this.
Belarus has very tight links with Russia and permitted Russia to utilize its territory to launch the invasion of Ukraine in February.
Ukrainian officials have recently asserted that Russia may be plotting a new invasion from Belarus, but Western nations insist there is no evidence to support this assertion.
In the meantime, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that the majority of districts lacked power in subzero temperatures due to a massive wave of Russian missile attacks.
Moscow fired dozens of missiles against Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv, Kharkiv, Lviv, and Odesa, on Thursday.
Mr. Zelensky cautioned that Moscow is “pushing itself more and further into a dead end.”
“The title of the world’s largest terrorist will have long-lasting effects on Russia and its inhabitants. And each rocket confirms the need for a tribunal to settle the conflict. This is precisely what will occur “he remarked.
