- Consequences of Being Associated with Wagner in the UK
On Wednesday, a draught proscription order will be presented to parliament, making it unlawful to be a member of or support the Russian group in the United Kingdom.
The Russian mercenary group Wagner will be designated as a terrorist organization, according to the Home Office.
On Wednesday, a draught proscription order will be presented to parliament, making it unlawful to be a member of or support the Russian group in the United Kingdom.
Certain violations of proscription are punishable by up to 14 years in prison.
By the order, Wagner’s property may be classified as terrorist property and seized.
The organization, which was commanded by Yevgeny Prigozhin until he died in a plane crash last month, has played a significant role in the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
It has also participated in conflicts in Sudan, Libya, the Central African Republic, and Syria.
The Home Office said the prescription order was predicated on the organization’s harm to British nationals abroad.
Wagner is a violent and destructive organisation that has been Putin’s military tool abroad,” said Home Secretary Suella Braverman.
Wagner’s destabilising activities help the Kremlin’s political interests while Putin’s leadership considers how to handle the monster it created.
“They are terrorists, pure and simple; this proscription order makes that clear under British law.
“Wagner was also involved in robbery, torture, and brutal homicides. Its operations in Africa, the Middle East, and Ukraine pose a threat to international security.
This is why we are blacklisting this terrorist organization and will continue to assist Ukraine in its struggle against Russia.
President Zelenskyy of Ukraine has previously demanded that Wagner be classified as a terrorist organization.
The crash that killed Prigozhin occurred precisely two months after he led a brief armed rebellion against Russia’s military leadership, posing the greatest threat to Mr. Putin’s authority during his 23-year reign.
