To protect an Arctic walrus discovered in Scarborough, New Year’s Eve fireworks had to be canceled at the last minute.
The event was canceled because of concern that it “could cause anguish to the animal.”
The leader of the council, Steve Siddons, expressed disappointment, but stated that “the welfare of the walrus must take primacy.”
The walrus, which has attracted large crowds since its arrival on Saturday, is believed to be the same one observed three weeks ago along the coast of Hampshire.
Mr. Siddons stated that the decision to cancel the event was based on the recommendation of the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR), which has been monitoring the marine animal.
The walrus, dubbed Thor, maybe “taking a holiday” and will continue northward in a few days once he has rested sufficiently to continue his trek.
On Saturday, a barrier was erected around the animal when onlookers arrived to catch a glimpse; one local compared the gathering to a summer day at a beach resort.
Chris Cook of the organization BDMLR stated that Thor must not be disturbed.
“We applaud the decision to cancel the fireworks display, but we recognize that some people may be disappointed,” he said.
“It is highly uncommon for an arctic walrus to arrive on the Yorkshire coast.
Before it can continue its voyage, the creature must rest and rejuvenate.
