The NSPCC has issued a statement urging companies to take immediate action, while police reportedly investigate a case in which an immersive video game gang sexually assaulted a girl’s digital persona.
The sexual exploitation of a child’s avatar in the metaverse is reportedly under investigation by British police, prompting the NSPCC to warn that technology companies must do more to protect young users.
Campaigners for the charity stated that online abuse is linked to physical abuse in the real world and can have catastrophic consequences for victims.
It is believed to be the first time a police force in the United Kingdom has investigated a sexual offence in virtual reality.
The victim, a girl under the age of 16, was reportedly traumatised by the incident while donning an augmented reality headset, according to the report.
The metaverse is a three-dimensional representation of the internet in which individuals exist and interact as avatars, which are self-created and controllable digital versions of themselves.
The most recent statistics from the Institute of Engineering and Technology indicate that in 2022, approximately 21% of children aged five to ten owned a virtual reality (VR) headset, and 6% utilised VR on a regular basis.
“Online sexual abuse has a devastating effect on children,” said Richard Collard, associate head of child protection online policy at the NSPCC. “Harm can be experienced in immersive environments where senses are intensified in ways that are very similar to the ‘real world.'”
Further, he stated that technology companies are rapidly releasing products without placing infant safety on their platforms as a top priority.
Mr. Collard stated that businesses must increase their efforts immediately to safeguard minors from abuse in virtual reality environments.

Urgent Calls for Action: Protecting Minors in Virtual Reality
It is critical that technology companies are able to observe and comprehend the damage occurring on their platforms, and that law enforcement has complete access to the necessary evidence and resources to protect minors.
The NSPCC also urged the government in a September report to provide funding and direction for officers investigating crimes that transpire in virtual reality.
Additionally, the charity demanded that the Online Safety Act be reviewed frequently to ensure that emergent dangers are covered by the law.
According to Ian Critchley, the National Police Chiefs’ Council’s leader on child protection and abuse, offenders’ recruiting techniques are constantly evolving.
He further stated, “This is why it is crucial that we unite in our struggle against predators, as we have in this instance, to ensure that young people are safe online and can utilise technology without fear or apprehension.”
The enactment of the Online Safety Act is a significant step in this direction; however, tech companies must take significantly more action to ensure the safety of their platforms.
Legislation that was approved by parliament the previous year grants regulators the authority to penalise social media companies for content disseminated on their platforms; however, its implementation has yet to occur.
The operational implementation of the regulations is currently under the development of guidelines by Ofcom, the communications regulator.
A representative from Meta, the company that administers a metaverse and owns Facebook and Instagram, stated: “The described behaviour has no place on our platform, which is why we have an automatic protection called personal boundary that keeps strangers within a few feet’s distance for all users.
