Sir Keir Starmer has reiterated that police should be on “high alert” heading into the weekend.

“My message to the police and all those charged with responding to disorder is to stay on high alert,” the prime minister said while visiting the Metropolitan Police’s special operations unit in Lambeth on Friday.

The disorder began in the aftermath of a mass stabbing incident in Southport on July 29, which murdered three young girls and injured several more.

The National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) reports that 741 people have been arrested for rioting, with 302 charged.
