House explosion in Edinburgh

Steven MacLennan describes how he and other neighbours rushed to assist when a fire broke out in the rubble of an end-of-terrace home that had been rendered “utterly unrecognisable” by a massive explosion. A local has identified the 84-year-old victim of the explosion as James Smith.

A heroic effort to rescue two persons was described by a neighbour in Edinburgh, where a house was rendered “completely unrecognisable” by a massive explosion.

Friday night at approximately 10:25 p.m., an explosion at a residence on Baberton Mains Avenue was detected from miles away and claimed the life of an 84-year-old man.

Local witnesses said the deceased was James Smith, who lived near the blast site in Edinburgh. It is presumed that his next of kin has been notified regarding his demise.

Community Impact and Evacuations

One neighbour described hearing the explosion from a nearby movie theatre and feeling it in their homes.

A man, 54 years old, and a woman, 43 years old, were transported to the hospital for treatment. The state of them is uncertain.

They were rescued by neighbours, including Steven MacLennan, who heard a “loud bang” and thought it was a car collision.

According to Mr MacLennan, he was confronted with “a scene of total devastation” he had previously only witnessed on television; he described the house as “completely unrecognisable.”

Upon hearing cries for assistance emanating from the debris heap, witnesses reported. He had entered headfirst and penetrated through the mess to locate the woman.

Mr MacLennan, who has twenty years of experience in the Army Reserves with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, remarked that he had never witnessed such a dramatic rescue operation before.

“As soon as I noticed there was a fire inside and she began to complain that she was being burnt, I was compelled to continue my efforts to extricate her.

“By some incredible chance, I was immediately adjacent to a burst water pipe, which I successfully ignited on fire.”

She told me she could feel the water, so I continued working until it was gone.

Mr MacLennan stated that the woman “wiggled free” after her legs were restrained and crawled out of the debris heap.

It was not a good idea to enter that pile of residue, but he was determined and had to continue because, in his opinion, the outcome would have been entirely different if he hadn’t.

Mr MacLennan proclaimed himself “not a hero” and lauded the others who contributed to the rescue operation.

He stated, “This is not about me; there were many others present as well.”

I was lucky to help her since I had a little training and was in the right place at the right time.

The situation would have been entirely different if it had not been for the ruptured water conduit.

Additionally, the individual was extracted from the rubble before the arrival of emergency services.

“Condolences and deepest sorrow” were extended by Mr MacLennan to the suffering man’s family, adding that the incident would “permanently haunt me.”

He further stated that this has been “devastating for the community.”

Ongoing Investigation and Support

Five vehicles were dispatched to the location by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service. They remained until Saturday morning before transferring authority to Police Scotland.

A spokesperson for the organisation verified that “reports of a gas explosion affecting residential properties on Baberton Mains Avenue” had been received but that no suspicious activity had been identified.

Gas distributor SGN, dispatched to assist emergency services, stated, “speculation as to what has transpired is premature at this time.”

A spokesperson added, “We are collaborating closely with authorities to assist in identifying the cause.”

As a precaution, numerous properties were evacuated, and the road remains closed.

Emergency services are still at the scene, and Police Scotland advises the public to stay away during the investigation.

A GoFundMe campaign has been created to support a family that lost their home and everything so close to Christmas.
