Surrey Police apprehended a total of eight dogs after the 28-year-old victim was killed at Gravelly Hill, Caterham. The woman on the ground was “being attacked by many dogs,” according to a witness.
A witness has stated that a woman who was fatally mauled at a Surrey beauty spot was bitten by “several dogs” and begged for passersby to “turn back.”
Thursday, paramedics were unable to save the 28-year-old woman who was attacked on Gravelly Hill in Caterham.
A second woman who was treated for dog bites has now been released from the hospital.
A witness told that she and her friend were riding horses when they witnessed the deceased woman “being attacked by many dogs” on the ground.
Sue Dove stated, “She yelled at us to turn around, at which point two of the free dogs ran at us and the horses, and my horse whirled around and bolted, causing me to fall.
The witness stated that she was left with “many different emotions.”
She went on: “(I feel) pity that a woman has died, but annoyance that people can walk so many dogs.
“Clearly out of control for whatever reason, this woman had fallen to the ground and was being attacked.
“Due to these repercussions and two dogs racing towards us, my horse bolted and I was thrown from it, landing on my right side with ribs and hip injuries.
“Thankfully, my horse eventually halted, allowing my companion to reach him. If he had continued, as a flight animal, this may have been another terrible accident.”
A popular spot for dog walkers
Eight canines were seized by Surrey Police, and officers are keeping their owners informed of the inquiry.
No arrests have been made.
Richard Bream, the proprietor of the nearby Mardens Kennels, stated that he had never before heard of a dog attack in the region.
He said: “This particular place, View Point, is where professional dog walkers arrive in their vans to take the dogs for a stroll.
I’ve always believed that dog walkers who have five or six dogs shouldn’t be allowed to do so.
A man at a nearby residence who requested anonymity stated, “The dogs dispersed into different regions of the forest, and the police aircraft was searching for them.”
‘Tragic occurrence’
A woman walking her border collie in the vicinity, who requested anonymity, expressed horror at the incident.
“It’s a pleasant round walk in the woods, and we’ve never had any problems previously. It is very frightening; normal canines would never behave like that “She stated,
The coroner for the county of Surrey will conduct an autopsy.
Inspector Lyndsey Whatley, borough commander for Tandridge, stated in a Friday update. “A young woman lost her life in this unfortunate tragedy, and our thoughts are with her family and friends.
“I am aware that the events of yesterday will be of great concern to the local community. And I would like to reassure them that we are confident that all of the dogs involved are in the custody of the police while we investigate the incident.
“Today, officers will stay in the Gravelly Hill area while investigations continue. If you have any information but have not yet spoken with us, please call us.”
