The proposed sanctions regime could also be used in response to other malign activities by Tehran. Such as its provision of weapons and ammunition to Russia in support of its war in Ukraine.
The foreign secretary announced that the United Kingdom is planning new sanctions against Iran in response to at least 15 “credible threats” to murder or kidnap individuals deemed a threat by the regime in Britain.
The sanctions gave James Cleverly “the tools to take further action if Iranian behaviour does not change in the future.”
It might also be deployed in response to Tehran’s supply of weapons to Russia for the Ukraine war.
Iran summoned Britain’s interim charge d’affaires in response.
When asked how concerned he was that it was only a matter of time before Iran succeeded in murdering a dissident on British soil, the foreign secretary responded, “We have seen Iran attempt to suppress dissenting voices and criticism.
“In the United Kingdom, we value free speech and press freedom and are willing to defend them. We will always remain vigilant”
He continued, “The Home Office, the security minister, and our security services have done an outstanding job of keeping people safe in the United Kingdom, and we support them in the international work that we do.” In addition, we are implementing these sanctions to deter and disrupt these acts of aggression.”
Mr. Cleverly gave an interview to coincide with a parliamentary announcement about the new sanctions regime on Thursday.
In a statement issued by the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office, he said, “The Iranian regime oppresses its people, exports bloodshed in Ukraine and the Middle East, and threatens to kill and kidnap on British soil.”
The UK warned the regime today that it will be held accountable for its misdeeds.
“Our new sanctions regime will help ensure that those who seek to harm us have nowhere to hide.”
The United Kingdom responded to over 15 “credible threats”
Since the beginning of 2022, the foreign office has responded to more than 15 “credible threats” to assassinate or capture British or British-based individuals whom Iran views as a threat.
According to the report, the Iranian regime has publicly advocated for the death or capture of these individuals. And in some instances has detained and harassed their families in Iran.
Iranian intelligence has partnered with UK and European organised crime organisations to expand their networks.
The planned sanctions regime, which will necessitate new legislation, is intended to expand the criteria under which Iranian officials and organizations can be sanctioned, including hostility towards the United Kingdom and the proliferation of weapons.
The statement was made as the United Kingdom assumed the alternating monthly presidency of the United Nations Security Council. It uses this position to express concern over Iranian activities, such as its military support for Russia in Ukraine.
