The bakery chain presently operates 2,300 stores throughout the United Kingdom, but it wants to open more locations. Especially in Cornwall and other regions of the South West of England.
Greggs aims to open new outlets in Cornwall and the South West of England, potentially competing with Cornish pasty makers.
Roisin Currie, the company’s CEO, says the company is on track to open 150 new stores across the country this year and could open even more if the appropriate locations become available.
She states that the corporation is especially interested in new sites in Cornwall and other South West regions of England.
Today, its fourth store in Cornwall will open in a business park in Saltash.
But Greggs – founded in Tyneside in 1939 and renowned for its sausage rolls and steak bakes – will encounter stiff competition in the county’s grab-and-go market, where the Cornish pasty has been a staple for centuries.
“The opening strategy is proceeding according to plan, and the new location in Cornwall is crucial to that,” Ms. Currie explained.
“We’re a Northern brand that’s naturally expanding to Cornwall and the South West.”
Greggs wants to open 3,000 UK outlets as part of its long-term strategy.
The company’s expansion strategy includes the opening of several forecourts and service stations that are geared toward tourists and motorists.
In May, the confectionary chain reported an almost 20% sales gain from 2023, despite the cost-of-living crisis.
It stated that its inexpensive dishes remained “compelling” to cash-strapped customers.
Ms. Currie stated, “We’re looking forward to the summer with great optimism, and we’re hopeful that the warm weather will result in more people being out and about, ultimately seeking a place to eat.”
