A “major incident” was declared on Wednesday afternoon in Steel Street, Ulverston, following the dispatch of police.
In northwest England, residences were evacuated while a bomb disposal squad investigated a “suspicious item” discovered in a residence, and a “major incident” was declared.
The item was discovered by Cumbria Police on Wednesday afternoon in Steel Street, Ulverston, in response to concerns for the well-being of an individual.
Fifty-three residences were voluntarily evacuated. On Thursday, the force declared that the object presented “no threat” and removed the precautionary police cordon that had been erected.
“An Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team conducted a thorough evaluation of the discovered item. Evaluations have determined that the item poses no threat,” it stated.
“Picture custody continues to be held for a 46-year-old man who was arrested in relation to this occurrence.”
While investigations continue, a police presence will continue to be maintained at the Steel Street residence in question.
Reception Centre and Road Reopening
Westmorland & Furness Council established a reception center at Ulverston Leisure Centre to accommodate evacuees in need of lodging.
Between Sir John Barrow Way and Steel Street, North Lonsdale Road has been reopened.
“I am pleased to inform Steel Street residents that the major incident has been resolved,” stated Superintendent Matt Pearman. “They may now reclaim their residences.”
“To aid in the coordination of multiple agencies’ efforts to assist those who were forced to evacuate their homes on Wednesday evening, a significant incident was declared.
This facilitated efficient information sharing among agencies. It enabled them to collaborate effectively to deliver the necessary assistance to individuals who were evacuated.
Everyone who had to evacuate their homes deserves praise for their bravery.
“While we regret any inconvenience that may arise from your inability to remain in your residence, the safety of all residents has always been and will continue to be our top priority.”
