- June Mills, 96, sentenced for dangerous driving causing death
- Brenda Joyce, 76, died in the Formby accident
- Mills received an 18-month suspended prison sentence
June Mills, a 96-year-old from Ainsdale, Merseyside, has been handed an 18-month suspended sentence after pleading guilty to causing the death of 76-year-old Brenda Joyce in a fatal accident. Mills’ vehicle mounted the pavement, hitting Joyce and another pedestrian in Formby in August of last year.
During the hearing at Liverpool Crown Court, the court learned that Mills accidentally applied too much pressure on the accelerator of her Vauxhall Corsa, which led to the tragic collision. Her lawyer, Tom Gent, explained that “the accelerator pedal fell beneath her foot, she panicked and failed to react.”
Sentencing Mills, Judge Simon Medland KC described the incident as an “utter tragedy,” highlighting that Brenda Joyce had lost her life, another pedestrian was injured, and Mills had lost her good character.

The accident occurred on Elbow Lane, where Brenda Joyce was pronounced dead at the scene. The other pedestrian, an 80-year-old woman, suffered minor injuries. Mills, who has seen her mobility worsen since the accident, is one of the oldest people in the UK to be convicted of causing death by dangerous driving.
