An investigation has been opened after the death of a 16-year-old boy at the Leeds Festival, which is believed to have been drug-related.
The adolescent became ill at the music festival on Saturday, was sent to the hospital, but died on Sunday.
West Yorkshire Police stated that they were investigating if he had consumed a specific form of MDMA.
Officers believe his death was a unique incident, but have not yet determined the specific cause of his passing.
Catherine Hankinson, deputy chief of police, stated: “Our thoughts are with the deceased boy’s family, and we are assisting them during this sad time.
“While the exact cause of his death has yet to be determined, one line of inquiry is that he ingested a grey or black oblong-shaped ecstasy (MDMA) tablet of a specific sort.
“At this time, it is thought that this is an isolated incidence, as no similar reports have been received.”
The organizers of the festival, which occurs every August bank holiday and is paired with the Reading Festival, stated that they were assisting the police with their investigation.
Melvin Benn, managing director of Festival Republic, stated, “We are profoundly grieved by this incident, and our deepest sympathies are with the family during this difficult time.”
