Monday saw four fatalities following two separate accidents in County Tyrone.
The drivers of two vehicles engaged in a collision on Dungannon Road near Cookstown, as well as a female passenger in one of the cars, were killed, according to the police.
A mother in her 20s and four children were transported to the Royal Victoria Hospital.
In a separate instance, a woman was killed in an accident on the M1 highway.
The fatal Dungannon Road collision killed a woman in her nineties and a male in his twenties. The third victim was a woman in her fifties, according to authorities.
The event occurred shortly before 15:30 GMT.
The road between Killycolp Road and Annagh Road was closed for several hours but is now open again.
The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) reported that two quick response paramedics, four emergency crews, one non-emergency crew, a hazardous area response team, and an ambulance officer were rushed to the location.
The Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) Air Ambulance and the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) were both dispatched to the incident.
Ch Supt. Gerard Pollock solicited information.
“The worst news imaginable”
Michelle O’Neill, deputy leader of Sinn Féin, described the news as “very distressing.”
She continued, “I extend my deepest condolences to the families of those cruelly lost and hope those injured have a good and swift recovery.”
Patsy McGlone, MLA for the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP), described it as “the worst conceivable news that family could get, especially at this time of year.”
In this terrible moment, my thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected.
Doug Beattie, the leader of the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP), stated in a tweet: “I cannot fathom the anguish those who survived must have undergone or the scene the emergency services encountered.
“Life is so valuable and vulnerable”
Leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), Sir Jeffrey Donaldson, stated: “Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone engaged in this dreadful incident, as well as the affected families and communities.
“We also include the emergency personnel who responded to the scene and the medical personnel who treated the injured.”
Mr. McGlone told the Irish state television RTE that he believed the woman killed in the earlier accident on the M1 was a young mother from County Tyrone.
Following the accident, the highway has reopened in all directions between junction 15 at Dungannon and junction 14 at Tamnamore.
