Two young children’s bodies were recovered in two bags purchased at auction in New Zealand, according to authorities.
The victims were believed to have been between the ages of five and ten when they died, and their bodies had likely been in storage for several years.
Examining the items found with the cases to identify them.
The remains were discovered when a family in South Auckland opened the suitcases they purchased last week at home.
The youngsters were concealed within two similar-sized luggage, according to Detective Inspector Tofilau Faamanuia Vaaelua.
“The nature of this discovery complicates the inquiry, especially given the length of time that elapsed between the time of death and the time of discovery,” he continued.
In addition to using personal and household items discovered with the bodies to identify the deceased children, authorities are reviewing hours of CCTV footage. However, they fear that significant moments may have been forgotten due to the passage of time.
Det Insp Vaaleua stated that New Zealand police were collaborating with the international criminal police organization Interpol, but it is believed that relatives of the victims are in the country.
“This inquiry is not simple,” Detective Inspector Vaaelua remarked.
“I can tell that we are making excellent progress with DNA investigations.
It is believed that the family who discovered the victims purchased a trailer-load of items, including the luggage, from a local storage facility on Thursday.
Det. Insp. Vaaelua reaffirmed that they had no link to the fatalities, were distressed, and were receiving support.
Forensics experts have thoroughly inspected both the storage unit and the property where the luggage was removed.
