- Gaudi’s iconic Sagrada Familia.
- Four towers completed in Barcelona.
- Symbolic masterpiece by 2026.
Designed by the Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi, who rests in the church’s crypt, the world-famous unfinished structure stands as an international symbol of Barcelona.
The city of Barcelona commemorates the completion of four towers of the renowned Sagrada Familia basilica after more than 140 years of construction.
Antoni Gaudi, the Spanish architect who is entombed in the church’s crypt, designed this globally recognized yet notably incomplete masterpiece.
Each tower signifies one of the four evangelists: Matthew, John, Mark, and Luke, who authored the gospels narrating Jesus’s life.

These towers encircle the tallest and central structure, dedicated to Christ, which will be the final tower to be built.
In the past week, sculptures representing Matthew (a man) and John (an eagle) were joined by Mark (a lion) and Luke (a bovine).
Next month, a celebratory mass will mark the completion of these four towers.
The church has been under construction for 141 years since the first stone was laid in 1875.
This massive UNESCO World Heritage site draws millions of tourists annually.
Gaudi, who died in 1926, spent much of his career creating the Sagrada Familia.
His unfinished creation has become an iconic symbol of Barcelona worldwide.
According to the La Sagrada Familia Foundation, ongoing construction relies on plaster models, photographs, and publications of the architect’s original drawings, which were destroyed in a fire during the 1930s.
It is expected to be finished on the 100th anniversary of Gaudi’s passing in 2026.
