The Washington Post reports that one of the major points of contention is the Trump legal team’s continuous failure to admit that all materials have been given to the federal government.
It has been reported that the Justice Department has urged a federal judge to hold Donald Trump’s office in contempt of court for failing to comply fully with a subpoena to return all sensitive papers in his possession.
The Washington Post reported on Thursday that one of the major points of contention was the Trump legal team’s continuous failure to admit that all materials have been surrendered to the federal government.
The newspaper reports that district court judge Beryl Howell has not yet held a hearing or ruled on the motion.
The former president and his staff deem the demand absurd, while the Justice Department declined to comment on the claim.
A spokeswoman for President Trump told Reuters that the former president’s attorneys “continue to cooperate and be transparent” while denouncing the investigation as “a political witch hunt.”
Wednesday, an appeals court ruled to stop the use of a third-party special master to review inquiry materials, allowing the Justice Department access to over 13,000 documents seized by the FBI from Mr. Trump’s Florida resort for the continuing criminal investigation.
Mr. Trump’s spokesman continued, “The president will continue to fight against the weaponization of law enforcement and will pursue legitimate legal routes to retrieve the things that were brazenly and illegally confiscated from his house during the unconstitutional search by the Biden government.”
The Justice Department is examining whether the former president violated the law by retaining classified government documents after leaving office in January 2021.
Mr. Trump, whom last month declared his intention to run for president a third time in 2024, is facing many legal issues. Investigations into his efforts to change the results of the 2020 presidential election continue.
He now faces a state investigation into an effort to overturn his election loss in Georgia, where a candidate that Mr. Trump backed enthusiastically failed to win a senate seat for the GOP this week, handing President Joe Biden a political victory.
His real estate corporation was found guilty of executing a criminal plan to deceive tax authorities over the past 15 years, but Mr. Trump was not charged in the case.
