  • RSF chief accuses Egypt of airstrikes, Egypt denies
  • Conflict has displaced over 10 million since April 2023
  • Egypt, UAE, and others accused of intervention in Sudan

The chief of Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has accused Egypt of being engaged in air strikes on the paramilitary group, but Cairo has denied the allegations.

Dagalo, also known as Hemedti, alleged that Egypt was deploying US bombers to target his soldiers near Jebel Moya, a strategic location south of Khartoum.

“If the Americans were not in agreement, these bombs would not reach Sudan,” he stated in a video uploaded online on Wednesday.

Egypt is fighting us,” he claimed, accusing it of being one of six countries that have intervened in the war, including Iran.

According to United Nations data, the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) recently gained an advantage in the fighting that erupted in April 2023, when long-simmering tensions between army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Dagalo erupted in a conflict that has displaced more than 10 million people – approximately 8.1 million people within Sudan and approximately two million forced to flee the country.

Dagalo further said Egypt gave training and drones to the SAF and al-Burhan.

Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs dismissed allegations that its air force was involved in the ongoing conflict in Sudan.

While Egypt denies those claims, it calls on the international community to ascertain the evidence that proves the truth of what the RSF militia leader said,” according to a statement from the ministry.

Egypt has been working with the United States and Saudi Arabia to settle the crisis. It also hosted meetings between opposing political forces earlier this year.

The SAF recently made advances in Khartoum and southeastern Sennar state, where the RSF head said that purported Egyptian air attacks on his men drove them away from the crucial Jebel Moya area.

Dagalo further alleged that mercenaries from Tigray, Eritrea, Azerbaijan, and Ukraine were present in the country.

The Sudanese civil war has seen waves of ethnic violence blamed primarily on the RSF, which has also been accused of crimes against humanity and sexual abuse.

However, rights groups claim that the SAF has also targeted civilians, shelled residential areas at random, and obstructed humanitarian deliveries. In August, the army refused to attend peace talks in Switzerland.

“This war will not finish in one, two, three, or four years. “Some talk about one million soldiers, and we will soon reach that number,” Dagalo stated.

The UAE has also been accused of intervening in the war. In June, Sudan’s UN envoy, Al-Harith Idriss al-Harith Mohamed, accused the UAE of arming the RSF.

In January, a UN assessment published for the UN Security Council said it had “credible” information that the UAE had transferred weaponry to the RSF “several times per week” through Amdjarass in northern Chad. The UAE disputed the accusations.

In September, Sudan’s military government denied bombing the UAE ambassador’s residence in Khartoum, blaming the rebel RSF.
