President Xi Jinping of China demands immediate medical care for the injured and a safety overhaul.
A colossal cooking gas explosion at a barbecue restaurant in northwest China has resulted in the deaths of 31 people and injuries to seven others.
The explosion occurred at approximately 8:40 p.m. local time on Wednesday in Yinchan, the capital of the predominantly Muslim Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, as people gathered on the eve of the Dragon Boat Festival holiday.
The Paper reported that a woman 50 metres from the eatery heard the blast.
She reported that dense smoke was emanating from the restaurant and that the air smelled strongly of cooking gas.
She added that two servers exited the building after the explosion, with one of them collapsing immediately.
President Xi Jinping of China demanded immediate medical care for the injured and a safety overhaul.
Several individuals were being treated for glass-related injuries and lacerations.
The Ministry of Emergency Management of the Central Government announced on social media that search and rescue operations at the restaurant were concluded early Thursday morning.
Inquirers were also dispatched to determine the cause of the explosion.
