Local reports said at least 11 police officers were slain in an ambush by armed assailants in eastern Pakistan.
Police say the attackers were armed with pistols and rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs), and seven additional officers were injured.
The officer convoy was attacked in Pakistan’s eastern Punjab province, specifically in the Rahim Yar Khan region.
According to Punjabi police, the convoy was driving through a deserted location as part of an operation to target criminals in the region.

Pakistan has seen an increase in militant strikes in recent years, but such a large number of police casualties in a single attack is unusual.
Pakistani security forces frequently conduct operations against bandits in the eastern Punjab and southern Sindh provinces, where they hide in rural, forested areas.
President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi issued comments condemning the incident, expressing sadness, and referring to the fallen cops as martyrs.
They prayed for the seven wounded cops’ speedy recovery and urged authorities to take swift and decisive action against the attackers.
