According to an annual global survey conducted by a Swiss manufacturer of air purifiers, Lahore gained more than 10 spots to become the city with the most polluted air in 2022.
On Tuesday, IQAir reported that central African Chad replaced Bangladesh as the most polluted nation in 2014.
IQAir measures air quality based on the concentration of PM2.5 airborne particulates, which are lung-damaging. Its annual survey is frequently cited by academics and government agencies.
Lahore became the world’s most dirty city in 2022 after PM2.5 levels rose from 86.5 to 97.4.
Lahore was followed by Hotan, the only Chinese city in the top 20, with PM2.5 levels of 94.3, an improvement from 101.5 in 2021.
Two Indian towns followed: Delhi was 92.6 and Bhiwadi 92.7.
The World Health Organization (WHO) suggests a PM2.5 concentration of no more than 5 micrograms per cubic meter.
While Chad had an average level of 89.7, Iraq, the second most polluted country, had an average level of 80.1.
Pakistan, which had two of the five cities with the worst air quality in 2022, ranked third in the countrywide rankings with a score of 70.9%, followed by Bahrain with a score of 66%.
Bangladesh’s air quality has improved since 2021 when it was deemed to have the worst air in the world. It is ranked fifth in the most recent report, with PM2.5 levels decreasing from 76.8 to 65.8.
The latest report placed India eighth with PM2.5 levels of 53.3.
According to the report, India and Pakistan had the poorest air quality in the Central and South Asian region, with nearly 60 percent of the population residing in areas where the concentration of PM2.5 particulate is at least seven times higher than the WHO’s recommendations.
It was stated that one in ten individuals worldwide reside in areas where air pollution poses a health risk.
Guam’s PM2.5 content was 1.3, while Canberra’s was 2.8.
The index used over 30,000 air quality monitors in 7,300 locations in 131 nations, territories, and regions.
