France advanced to the quarterfinals of the World Cup after forwards Olivier Giroud and Kylian Mbappe set scoring records in a 3-1 victory over Poland.
Giroud made history by becoming France’s all-time leading scorer during the match at Al Thumama Stadium in Qatar, as the reigning champions took the victory.
Giroud broke the record with his goal after the first half, giving him 52 for his career.
The 36-year-old drew level with fellow ex-Arsenal striker Thierry Henry, who held the record with 51 goals, after scoring twice in France’s 4-1 opening Group D victory over Australia.
Mbappe scored the remaining two goals, becoming the first player to score eight and then nine World Cup goals before reaching the age of 24.
His first of the evening occurred 73 minutes into the second half, and he scored again 91 minutes later.
Robert Lewandowski scored a late consolation goal from the penalty spot to end the game 3-1 for Poland.
France will face England in the quarterfinals after Gareth Southgate’s team defeated Senegal by a score of 3-0.
