According to a local inhabitant, the victims were returning from an overnight wedding ceremony in the village of Egboti in the state of Niger.

At least one hundred people were murdered after a boat capsized in northern Nigeria, according to police.

A search for survivors is underway after a canoe capsized on the River Niger on Monday morning (12 June), close to the state of Niger, according to Okasanmi Ajayi, spokesman for the Kwara state police.

Usman Ibrahim, a resident, stated that the victims, including children, were returning from an overnight wedding ceremony in the village of Egboti in the state of Niger.

Mr. Ibrahim stated, “Upon disembarking, passengers were to transport their bicycles to their respective communities.” When the boat sank, it was transporting more than 100 people.”

He stated that few people knew about the tragedy until many hours later because it happened at 3 a.m.

“Some deceased individuals are still being searched for,” he said.

It is currently unclear whether there are any survivors.
