AMMAN: The Lebanese army stated on Sunday that Israeli gunboats breached Lebanese territorial waters multiple times on Saturday in a region opposite Ras Naqura, close to the boundary between the two nations. Israel disputed the allegations.
According to the statement, there were four infractions in which gunboats entered several hundred meters into Lebanese waters, and the violations were being discussed with a United Nations temporary force.
According to an Israeli military statement, its forces “did not cross the Lebanese sea border.
Lebanon and Israel approved a pact negotiated by the United States outlining their respective maritime rights last week.
If finalized, the accord — hailed as a historic achievement by all three parties involved — would signal a diplomatic departure from decades of war and antagonism and open the door to offshore energy exploration.
Israel has been accused for years by Lebanon of violating its airspace with reconnaissance drones and fighter aircraft.
