A large fire at a seven-story building in Rome has left one person deceased and at least nine others injured.
The fire, which broke out on Friday afternoon in Colli Aniene, an eastern neighborhood of the capital, is now under control, and firefighters are searching the structure for anyone who may be stranded inside.
The unidentified victim’s corpse was discovered on a staircase on the upper floors of the building.
According to the Italian news agency Ansa, they perished from smoke inhalation.
The majority of those who were injured suffered from smoke inhalation, while others were burned.
Officials stated that the incident’s cause is being investigated, and a prosecutor has visited the scene.
Alessandro Paola, the provincial commander of the fire department, stated, “It is currently impossible to determine where the fire originated.”
Mr. Paola affirmed that there were two or three explosions before the renovation scaffolding was consumed by flames.
According to La Repubblica, the renovations included thermal cladding and the installation of roof panels.
Tents have been erected to accommodate the building’s approximately 100 displaced residents.
Mr. Paola stated that the apartments were being inspected for safety and that it would be “only after these operations” before residents could return.
Roberto Gualtieri, the mayor of Rome, stated that he wished to “express my solidarity with all the injured.”
“We are close to the families affected by this tragedy and will support them in every way,” he added.
