- Kim Jong Un tests attack drones
- Focus on drone military modernization
- US-South Korea hold defense drills
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the testing of domestically produced attack drones, according to state media KCNA.
North Korean media published photos on Monday of a white drone with X-shaped tails and wings crashing into and destroying a target resembling South Korea’s K-2 main battle tank.
Kim, who was photographed sitting at a desk surrounded by advisers, has been modernizing his country’s military and expanding its nuclear capabilities as tensions with Washington and Seoul rise.
According to KCNA, the North Korean leader oversaw the test while visiting the Drone Institute of North Korea’s Academy of Defense Science.
Kim stated that global trends in military technology and modern battle demonstrated the necessity of drones in conflict and that Pyongyang’s military should be equipped with them “as soon as possible.

He advocated for the expedited development and manufacture of a variety of systems, including exploding drones for use by infantry and special operations forces, reconnaissance and multi-purpose attack drones, and underwater suicide attack drones, KCNA reported.
Pyongyang has increased its tactical warfare capabilities, including short-range missiles and heavy artillery geared at attacking South Korea, after making significant progress in its longer-range ballistic missile and nuclear programs in defiance of UN sanctions.
The drone test comes as the US and South Korean forces hold a large-scale exercise to improve their combined ability to protect against the North Korean menace.
The drills will continue until Thursday.
