- Six-year-old girl pleads for help
- Trapped during Gaza attack
- Red Crescent workers also killed
Three hours were spent on the phone with Hind Rajab as call operators attempted to console her following the attack earlier this month in the Tel al Hawa suburb of Gaza City.
The Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) reported that a six-year-old girl, captured on camera pleading for help during an attack in Gaza, along with five of her relatives and two ambulance workers who rushed to her aid, was found dead.
The PRCS stated that Hind Rajab retrieved the phone from her teenage cousin, Layan Hamadeh, after her death earlier this month in an attack on the Tel al Hawa suburb of Gaza City.
Believed to be the sole survivor, Hind was recorded begging rescuers: “Come and get me… Could you please accompany me, as I am scared?”
Hind, her three cousins, uncle, and aunt were reportedly trapped in their vehicle at a roundabout when the attack occurred, according to the PRCS.
While pleading for assistance, Layan, Hind’s cousin, screamed and informed call handlers that an approaching Israeli tank was visible.
The student may have called the PRCS to say she was the only survivor.
Three hours were spent on the phone with call handlers as they attempted to comfort her.
Then, according to aid workers for the organisation, they successfully negotiated with the Israeli military and received authorisation to dispatch an ambulance with two crew members to the location.
Tragedy Amidst Calls for Civility
Paramedics Youssef Zeino and Ahmed Madhoon were subsequently reported missing and found dead near Hind’s family and their burned-out ambulance.
Israel asserts that its operations in Gaza are conducted to avoid hitting civilians. The IDF stated it was investigating the incident.
However, on social media, Palestinians and their supporters have been galvanised by Hind’s audio.
The PRCS said that the remains had been retrieved and that the region was hazardous for 12 days.

“The occupation deliberately targeted the Red Crescent crew, despite prior coordination to enable the ambulance to reach the site in time to rescue Hind,” stated a PRCS statement.
An International Committee of the Red Cross spokesperson further stated, “As our investigation into the precise circumstances continues.” “We wish to emphasise the critical nature of protecting civilians.” No child should ever be subjected to the terrifying prospect of being surrounded by the remains of their family members.”
The possibility that these were Hind’s final moments is both agonising and devastating.
