- Rescue efforts underway
A landslide has claimed the lives of at least eight individuals and left dozens more unaccounted for in Yunnan, a province in the southeastern part of China.
The landslide occurred at 05:51 local time (21:51 GMT) in Zhaotong on Monday, entrapping 47 individuals.
President Xi Jinping has ordered an “all-out” rescue operation in the subzero temperature-stricken region.
The landslide’s cause is unknown; however, the secluded, mountainous region is susceptible to such occurrences.
Over one thousand neighbouring rescue workers were dispatched, and over five hundred individuals were forced to evacuate their residences. Reportedly, Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing of China led a team to the location in charge of directing rescue efforts.

According to one villager who spoke with local media, most inhabitants were minors or older. A second resident told Jimu News that the landslide occurred Monday morning while most of the population was slumbering.
She stated it was extremely noisy and shook; it felt like a major earthquake.
Social media videos depicted rescuers traversing debris heaps set against the backdrop of snow-covered mountains. Dispersed personal possessions are observed within the deteriorating masonry.
In the same county in January 2013, a landslide claimed the lives of at least eighteen individuals.
