Former nurse Bella Montoya was placed under “permanent surveillance” in intensive care after spending five hours alive in her casket.
A 76-year-old woman who was incorrectly pronounced deceased and surprised her family by knocking on her coffin has passed away.
The health ministry of Ecuador reported that Bella Montoya perished on Friday evening after suffering a stroke after spending seven days in intensive care.
She was under “permanent surveillance” after the bizarre incident in the city of Babahoyo, which provoked an investigation of the hospital by the government.
A technical committee has also been constituted to examine the hospital’s death certificate issuance procedures.
Gilberto, her son, stated that authorities have not yet provided him with a medical explanation of what transpired, and he warned that “things will not remain this way forever.”
He added that Ms. Montoya’s sister had filed a formal complaint and was attempting to identify the physician who pronounced her deceased in the first place.
After five hours in her funeral home casket, former nurse Mrs. Montoya was transported to the hospital on Friday.
It scared us all,” Mr. Montoya said.
“There were approximately 20 of us… Approximately five hours into the wake, the coffin began to emit noises.
As we approached, my mother was covered in sheets and beating the casket, heavily breathing.
She was returned to the funeral home and buried in a public cemetery.
