- Rising migrants, changing dynamics
- Tragic deaths in English Channel
- Net migration reaches record
On Wednesday at approximately 1:30 p.m., a woman and a man, both believed to be in their 30s, were discovered motionless near Boulogne-Sur-Mer, according to the local prosecutor who spoke to Le Monde.
Two migrants attempting to enter the United Kingdom from France perished in the English Channel.
Sixty individuals were discovered aboard a dinghy that had encountered distress, including them.
When rescued from the water, several group members were suffering from hypothermia after falling into the water.
However, medical personnel were unable to revive the two individuals who were discovered unresponsive.
Ongoing Tragedy in the English Channel
They are the seventh and eighth migrants to perish at sea this year off the coast of France.
Six additional individuals, all aged between 21 and 34 and hailing from Afghanistan, perished on August 12th.
The announcement of the most recent fatalities coincides with the twenty-seventh anniversary of the most catastrophic loss of life in the Channel’s recent history, which occurred on November 24, 2021, when 27 migrants drowned.
Changing Dynamics of Channel Crossings
As of now this year, at least 27,708 individuals have entered the United Kingdom via small vessels, according to government data.
This is 34% less than the corresponding period in 2022, when 42,206 individuals had circumvented the perilous voyage.

Although the total number of individuals undertaking the perilous journey in 2023 was comparatively lower than the previous year, the capacity of each vessel carrying more people has grown. This trend suggests that smugglers are prioritising financial gain over ensuring the safety of their passengers.
Approximately 49 individuals have been discovered on board each vessel that has arrived in the United Kingdom thus far this year. It decreased from 41 per vessel in 2019 to 13 in 2020.
Net migration to the UK hit an all-time high of 745,000 in 2022, according to revised official data released Thursday.
