The Eiffel Tower in Paris is reportedly corroded and in need of extensive maintenance.
The iconic structure is being repainted for the twentieth time in preparation for the Olympic Games of 2024.
According to confidential reports cited by the French magazine Marianne, the wrought-iron landmark will only receive a cosmetic coat of paint before the 2024 Olympic Games in the capital city.
The 324-meter (1,064-foot) tower is among the most-visited tourist attractions in the world, receiving approximately six million visitors annually.
It was constructed in the late 19th century by Gustave Eiffel.
Marianne cites confidential reports from experts as evidence that the vehicle is in poor condition and corroded.
Simply put, if Gustave Eiffel were to visit the site, he would have a heart attack,” an unnamed manager of the tower told the magazine.
The tower is currently undergoing a 60m (£51.7m) paint job in preparation for the 2024 Olympics. This is the twentieth time that it has been painted.
Marianne stated that only 5 percent of the tower will be treated due to delays caused by the COVID pandemic and the presence of lead-based paint.
The company that manages the tower, Societe d’Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel (SETE), is hesitant to close it for an extended period due to the loss of tourism revenue, according to the publication.
