A murderer who committed a stabbing spree in a Japanese retail mall gets executed.

In 2008, Tomohiro Kato drove a truck into a crowded retail district in Tokyo before stabbing his victims, according to NHK. The Japanese authorities reportedly “executed” Kato’s death sentence.

Kato sent tens of thousands of shoppers fleeing when he crashed the rented vehicle into a throng of people on the capital’s Akihabara district’s main street.

The crime sent shockwaves through a nation renowned for its calm lifestyle.

Kato was condemned to death for the crime, and his execution was finalized in February 2015 by Japan’s Supreme Court.

The highest court rejected Kato’s appeal against a lower court’s punishment, stating that his acts “left no room for leniency.”

The suspect who told police he was “weary of life” also stated that he had traveled to Akihabara “to kill people” without regard to their identities.

In addition to the seven fatalities, at least ten persons were injured. One of them was a traffic officer assisting the people who had been struck by Kato’s truck.

The Tokyo neighborhood of Akihabara was renowned as a hub for the manga comic and anime film subculture.

After Kato’s murderous rampage, Japan’s knife possession laws were strengthened.
